{in times of desolation} ~ reflecting on times of struggle

I have been thinking about my friends,
blog friends and 'real life' friends,
who are going through trying times.
*
I have friends in all sorts of situations,
from family struggles to job loss or job insecurity, to major health problems.
Thinking of them has been turning me to reflect on how my life was
about five and four years ago, and even longer, to be birth of this blog.
*
I got my Masters in 2006 in library science and lived in Ottawa.
I had a great co-op, a great first contract, a great second contract
and then took a job that ended up being a difficult complicated one
that I eventually lost
*
Later on that summer I read a book on toxic job environments
and how one feels when one is in one...
and realized that was me...
I think the job and the problems were so many-leveled that there was
truly not one person or person to blame;
just a difficult situation that was only getting worse.
It took a long time to recover from this.
I took an English class that summer, thought of going back to school
and do English PhD but was basically told by my professors
and the prof of the class I took not to do it if I did not have
another source of income.
I began taking French courses;
one of the main problems for me getting a job in Ottawa
was that it is a government town (it's the Capital of Canada)
and bilingual with English and French.
I tried my best; it was really difficult to learn French as an adult.
To this day I love French...
the other day here in NJ at the grocery store there was a Dad and Son talking French.
I loved it.
Anyway, French learning was from 2009-2010.
By summer 2010,
even though I LOVED Ottawa and did not in anyway want to leave it,
I started applying to jobs outside of Ottawa.
I was flown to an all day interview and even was shown around
the place by a realtor in case I got the job.
I prepared for that interview for 2 weeks strait night and day.
I dazzled them in many ways, knowing each person and presentations they
did that they had even forgotten about.
But they did not choose me because it was a two-jobs into one job and I
was super strong in the one of two areas but not the other.
It took me days to recover strength from that, it was quite grueling,
with the flying out, interviewing and being shown around before
going back to Ottawa.
Less than two months after that interview,
I got an unexpected tax bill in the mail;
at first I thought it was their mistake
but actually it was mine and I suddenly owned the government
an amount that would mean that I had no savings left whatsoever.
So many people came to my aid,
and my blog community was so supportive, I can't tell you how much
I was blessed by this.
*
Well, I found out via an blog friend who emailed me that I could
pay the tax bill in installments.
Like 10.00 at a time.
So that cleared up.
But my money was still running out.
What was I to do?
At the same time I had crazy health issues,
I am sure from stress of it all, and felt that I could not move home to MI
to my parents because I would have no health insurance.
So there I was needing to pay rent, buy food, pay for my phone and hydro.
Well, my parents managed to fly me home for Christmas,
I believe to this day that St. Nicholas gave me a good affordable ticket
that they could pay for,
and God through people gave me enough
money to pay rent for two or so months.
*
Then, after getting unexpected money for over two months,
I had again about 300.00 left after paying some bills,
knowing that rent was over 800.00, I was walking back
from the bank, where I had paid the bills,
and told God:
OKAY.
If You want me to continue surviving by means other than jobs,
than I accept whatever it is You bring me.
And all of a sudden I got an email for a contract,
got the contract and had work through Pascha and
enough money to last me a few months past Pascha,
by then having another contract...
*
By that summer, I was introduced to a man who
in time I married and now live in NJ with,
my beloved Mr. Husband.
*
I had two more jobs while I was dating him, other than that second contract.
The first one was one that only lasted two months
and was very painful in losing it but it was a blessing
as it allowed me to see my Oma for what turned out to be the last time,
*
The second and last job contract I had in Ottawa
ended that summer that I was planning my wedding.
It was a great place to work and a real blessing to me.
*
So then I left my beloved Ottawa,
a new Bride to Mr. Husband and have been making my home in
NJ ever since.
*
So I've been there:
*job loss and running out of money
*a health crisis that was actually 50/50 that it would be cancer
but was not
*feeling at times very alone and in the constant stress of not having
enough money to live on, to pay basic bills
*
It's very hard.
I think in ways most of us or all of us go through times like this.
*
What I am hoping to do is to slowly write blog posts
on what I learned through this time,
what I see as most important to do,
how I dealt with being a single woman without biological family
where I lived when I was going through all of this.
*
For now I will end by saying that
I am glad I went through it but of course in my weakness
would not want to repeat it.
I went from having great jobs, earning good money, to not having
enough money to live on,
even moving apartments to save money in the process.
*
I went from a beautiful perfect apartment to one with
many challenges.
*
Yet that apartment is where my now husband
proposed to me,
it was an apartment that taught me so much.
*
I will end with this:
Whatever you are going through,
God is with you.
Whatever it is,
the Mother of God can help you.
The challenge may not end immediately but focus on being with God today.

Tuesday, almost fully half-way to Pascha

Tomorrow, as I heard on Sunday,
is half-way to Pascha.
How much we all want to be there!
But we need to go through Great Lent...
the Resurrection comes by going through the Cross...

So I had a tablet.
It died. Just a Lenten temptation.
There are many of these.
So now I have a chromebook.
I am learning how to use it and cleaned up my
Google drive files...
Spring cleaning electronically I gather.
*
I am thinking a lot these days on how to make our
lives not only more functional, but more beautiful.
Clutter and general apathy in terms of habits/mess
means that a lot of changes that
frankly are not easy to do.
*
It's funny but building habits like
putting things away immediately are hard to master.
I am weak and so keep thinking and working on it,
trying to pray...
*
I managed to clean up my Google drive and my actual desk area...
Laundry, that other constant, still needs to be done...

Yet the orchid has a second flower now...
and a third on the way.
1 hour of watering, 1 day/week.
God is very merciful.
*
It takes a long time, at least in my life,
to realize what one needs to do
and how to reorient oneself to live in a more
whole manner,
which I am seeing is not found in some grand philosophy
or understanding a profound truth,
though we need these too,
but it is in things like cleaning one's desk,
putting away paper, making one's bed,
washing clothes.
*
So many times it is just the little things that I can do
but doing them consistently makes for
a more peaceful, ordered and beautiful existence.

Status...

That familiar feeling
of swollen throat
exhaustion
and needing Popsicles
is returning...
*
I hope this is not a relapse of mono and
just a cold...
*
prayers requested.

Friday - a cold grey day but warm inside

Happy to say that
though I did not fall asleep until late,
I slept the night through.
First time in a long time.
That I am still tired is merely not a surprise.
I am thankful.

The tulips from an earlier day.
The purple one are starting to droop.
Going to see if I have a taller vase for them...

I am thankful for the oil for my lampadas.

It is almost Great Lent.
*
Mat. Emily has some great ideas for lent with small children.
The Psalter Reading Group is going again.
I signed up this year ~ my first time.
I hope I will have the strength to do it;
I have the cute green Psalter now
and hope to carve some time for this,
while sitting in my cozy corner.
*
It's been a month now since I first got sick.
Various people with mono have said it took them
between 1-2 months to recover.
I am hoping that by Pascha I will be well.
*
Other than some more link-lists I hope to do,
I am happy with how I changed my blog's layout
and look...
I had been wanting to do it for a while.
*
Mr. Husband and I finished watching
The Princess Bride.
Cute.
Mr. Husband thought it was nice to watch once
but would not watch it again.
I on other hand can see watching it again.
*
It's almost Forgiveness Sunday.
I don't know if/that I will make it to the services.
Am tired.
Such a strange time.
But God is still here with us.
*
Am still getting used to Feedly.
It seems to not have archived all of the data I
had in my Google Reader account.
More to be looked at there...
*
What is in store for your weekend?

The Bread is Beautiful and the Snow Plentiful

Forgot to mention...
I got the email suggesting our house blessing
be rescheduled for another day.
*
With the amount of snow coming down
and the drive that would have to be done
by many to have this blessing
it is not worth the risk, danger, etc.
*
So we will be rescheduling...
*
Meanwhile,
the bread is baked
and Mr. Husband and I each had 1 slice
hot out of the oven
with raspberry jam!
*
Here it is risen,
unbaked...

I did a new for me thing
and used our pizza stone to bake them on,
with the parchment paper underneath,
and under the pizza stone,
a Pyrex casserole dish with boiling water
in it,
both of which were in the oven when
I turned it one for the 30 minute preheat.

The parchment paper was a bit too long... :)
But no fires, no burning, no problems! :)

The secret to the golden bread
I mentioned in my first sour dough bread post:
brush the just hot out of the oven
bread with olive oil.
*
Before I did this,
it was a pale pale golden hue.

I was looking at the bread
freshly baked and was puzzled...
something was different...
*
Then I realized that I had forgotten
to pierce the tops!
Oops...
so this one cracked open,
the other did not...
*
These two loaves were denser
than some of my other sour dough loaves;
but I think that the dough may not of risen as high
during the first rising time...
*
There can be all different factors...
and I read in this blog post
that Gretchen Joanna posted
that weather can influence baking and that
sunny days help the bread rise more...
*
I also used a pizza stone and
had water underneath;
another way to do it,
that I did with the cranberry orange bread,
is to open the oven and spray water in...
So many things to experiment with...

But still,
the bread was good!

Now I just need a soup to go with it
or another hot dish...
*
If we have power tomorrow,
I am thinking of baking a baked chicken with
milk/cream sauce that I have not
done before...

Meanwhile,
the snow keeps coming down.

But we know where our hope is:
our faithful loving Saviour
and Lord
Jesus Christ.

Family, Grief and prayer requests

This was our family Christmas tree this year;

we did not have time or the energy to put up

our tall tree this year;

we did the presents for Christmas and our Christmas dinner

early since my sister and bro-in-law

are leaving tomorrow...

we had our early Christmas dinner Sunday night.

It was a fish day for me so we all had

really nice salmon for dinner.

My sister and bro-in-law leave tomorrow

for Romania.

I will miss them...

*

Today was a bit of a 'recovery' day for me as last week

was so intense with grief, traveling, family gatherings

and a 10 hour work day on Friday

to submit the proposal...

and we had not gotten home until 1 AM Friday morning

from Brampton so it really was a very

great effort the next day.

My family helped or I would of not even made it...

*

I had a hard day today;

getting back to things and not having a lot of energy.

I hope tomorrow is better and am taking things

one moment at a time.

*

Asking your prayers for Noah as he had to have a

and also for Jan, the Mother-in-law of Katherine who

many of us in the blog world have known

and loved for years;

my heart was heavy to read that Jan had fallen

esp. as this is what happened to my Oma just

days ago...

*

I am thinking that I need to read some things on grief;

in our fallen world all die;

my Oma was 20 days from being 103 years old;

but as my spiritual father has said many times,

no matter how old the loved one is when

they die, they still die too young.

I wear the scarf my Oma had just knitted and mittens

that she knitted a year or so ago.

At some point I will do a service for her at my church;

I have prayed the Akathist to the Lord for the departed;

but I still feel like there should be something

more I can do, somehow...

I hope in time to be able to do so.

For now all I can say is that

I still miss my Oma...
